Personality variables are affected on several scales, each one of two opposing characteristics. Changes to personality affect the flavor text in many conversations, especially (but not only) the Matchmaker interviews.
There are three separate variables tracking different forms of antisocial behavior, as it were: selfish/noble, indifferent/compassionate, and immoral/ethical.
Some delegates care more about ethics than others. Lyon, Clarmont and Lisle are particularly affected by positive ethical scores. Gisette on the other hand responds positively to a certain moral lability. The matchmaker doesn't seem to mind either way, but will caution the player that being an a-hole won't gain her many friends (paraphrased).
